It relates the story of a Sephardic family; Ben Dayan – the hero of the story, born in 1482 in Toledo that at the time was the capital city of the Aragon and Castile kingdom – was one of the five children, the father being a humble but very gifted cobbler ; they lived in the Judería, the Sephardic quarter of the city. Ben was an exception : a blue-eyed redhead, an ethnic type inherited from an Ashkenazi ancestor, as had been the case for numerous Sephardic Jews as the novel explains. The family owned a donkey that the father used for his deliveries in town and that Ben had named ‘Rico’ this donkey being the only friend and confident of the boy who used to tell him all that happened to him. When he was old enough to do so, Ben had learned to read and write, apart from Judesmo, – the vernacular of the Sepharads – Hebrew, Aramaic and Castilian, showing himself very gifted at it. Avran, the father, was the favourite supplier of a very influential viscount who had taken him under his wing; with his help, he had managed to become the official Purveyor of the Spanish Court for all leather handicrafts, going from men’s boots and ankle boots and gloves for ladies, to saddles and harnesses for the coaches, and things were looking up for him until that day in 1492 when the Sovereigns, after their victory over the Moors at Granada, had signed the Edict of the Alhambra ordering the expulsion from the kingdom of the Jews who refused to convert to catholicism.Rather than renouncing their faith, the Dayan family, along with the better part of the Jewish community, had left Spain for Turkey – where the Sultan had offered to welcome them – leaving behind ‘Rico’ to Ben’s deep sorrow. From Alicante, they had boarded a ‘jabeque’ named the Levante sailing to Salonico. The voyage had been an adventure during which all of them had barely escaped being the victims of the Barbary pirates and it was on that trip that Ben had developed a taste for sailing. A member of the convoy was Samuel Benveniste, a friend of Avran’s, a prosperous intellectual, a polyglot translater who had taught Ben the Castilian tongue and who, forsaking all that he owned, had left with his family rather than converting. This Sam Benveniste was to play a major part in Ben’s life.Upon reaching Salonico, Sam Benveniste had soon become a major member of the new Jewish community, enjoying a privileged relationship with the Turkish authorities. He had turned to the business of import-export and taking young Ben under his wing, and hiring him as a secretary. It was thus that Ben, at fifteen, having become a tall young man, after having had a love affair with a Turkish girl who had left him, leaving him broken-hearted, had left on Sam’s business, joining a caravan bound for Samarkand, a city they had business dealings with, in the company among others of Tsin, a Tibetan who was to become his friend and who would teach him the martial arts. The trip up to that city was to be rife with perilous adventures, love affairs and all kinds of events out of which Ben, months later, had come out hardened and wiser on all counts, the economic one not being the least of them.During the trip that had taken them from Alicante to Salonico, Ben had become friendly with the Catalan crew of the Levante and the very same ship had sailed back to Salonico on business; it was at the harbour that Ben had met them again, that they had hugged like old friends and that he had learned that the captain and owner of the ship wanted to sell it, which had given him an idea. Apart from the business he did on Sam’s account – importing uncut stones and exporting the same, cut and polished by Salonico’s Jewish craftsmen, buying and selling textiles and other goods – with the blessing of his friend cum employer, he had made business deals that had allowed him to gather enough money to buy the Levante. On Sam’s death, having become captain and owner of the ship, he decided to sail the Mediterranean, the ‘Mare Nostrum’ o, A donkey named Rico - part 2 Salonico (English Edition) eBook herunterladen PDF, A donkey named Rico - part 2 Salonico (English Edition) eBook gratuito, herunterladen gratis eBook A donkey named Rico - part 2 Salonico (English Edition), A donkey named Rico - part 2 Salonico (English Edition) buch online gratuito, A donkey named Rico - part 2 Salonico (English Edition) leggere manuali online gratis, A donkey named Rico - part 2 Salonico (English Edition) download gratuito buch, herunterladen gratis A donkey named Rico - part 2 Salonico (English Edition) Libro, gratis PDF herunterladen A donkey named Rico - part 2 Salonico (English Edition)
